Second Language Acquisition: An Introductory Course (3rd ed.): S. Gass & L. Selinker

The new and updated edition of this bestselling introductory textbook is a comprehensive overview of the field of second language acquisition. In an easy-to-read accessible style, it provides students with information about the scope of the field, but also provides background information on related areas such as first language acquisition. The book introduces students to current issues of data collection and data analysis, as well as provides an historical overview of the field, thus giving students context and perspective about how today?Ts issues arise from earlier approaches.
Each chapter offers discussion questions and/or problems so that students can put their knowledge to use in a way that is relevant to what they have learned, but that also challenges them to go beyond what is in the chapter and to relate information across chapters.
The book covers a range of areas of second language research including sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and linguistic perspectives. It also includes a chapter on the lexicon and on instructed second language learning. The concluding chapter pulls the information in the previous chapters together into a coherent framework that challenges students to think about the field of second language acquisition as a whole.

Theory Construction in Second Language Acquisition: Geoff Jordan

Recently, many SLA researchers have adopted a postmodernist approach which challenges the assumption that SLA research is a rationalist, scientific endeavour. The resulting epistemological arguments, plus problems of theory proliferation, contradicting theories, and theory domain, hinder progress towards a unified theory of SLA. Theory Construction in SLA addresses these problems by returning to first principles; it asks whether there is such a thing as reliable knowledge, what is special about scientific method, and how we can best explain SLA. It is the first book to use the philosophy of science in order to examine the epistemological underpinnings of SLA research and evaluate rival theories of SLA. Part One explores the central issues in the philosophy of science, defends rationality against relativists, and offers Guidelines for theory assessment. Part Two examines different theories of SLA and evaluates them in terms of how well they stand up to the Guidelines.

The Teacher's Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom: R. M. Gillies, A. Ashman & J. Terwel

The Teacher's Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom provides readers with a comprehensive overview of these issues with clear guidelines on how teachers can embed cooperative learning into their classroom curricula to obtain the benefits widely attributed to this pedagogical practice. It does so by using language that is appropriate for both novice and experienced educators. The volume provides: an overview of the major research and theoretical perspectives that underpin the development of cooperative learning pedagogy; outlines how specific small group experiences can promote thinking and learning; discusses the key role teachers play in promoting student discourse; and, demonstrates how interaction style among students and teachers is crucial in facilitating discussion and learning. The collection of chapters includes many practical illustrations, drawn from the contributors own research of how teachers can use cooperative learning pedagogy to facilitate thinking and learning among students across different educational settings.

English in Color: 61 Colorful Idioms in English with Practice Exercises for EFL students: Dean Curry

English in Color  contains 61 idioms in which color plays a principal role. It also supplemented with practice exercises. The basic intent of the book is to help EFL students increase their knowledge of idiomatic expressions and have fun while doing it.
The five sections of each chapter provide an opportunity for lively discussion and practice using the idioms. The text may be used by students individually as resource material and individual study or by teachers as a supplemental language activity book in the classroom. Teachers so using the text are encouraged to elicit more communicative language activities by taking advantage of reactions evoked by the discussions.
No doubt this color proclivity has psychological significance, but it is not the intent of this booklet to examine factors involved in the favoritism of these four colors.  Some colorful language experiences await you!
